The Thrill of Performing Live (By Marco Buccelli)

rock bandPlaying live concerts is the reason why we learn to play an instrument, or at least that is my take on it. I am writing this blog entry form Tulsa, OK. I am currently on tour with Xenia Rubinos (dear students, I will be back soon! Keep on practicing!) and I thought this would have been a great opportunity for me to remind all the students at HAA how important it is to play live concerts! Being on stage teaches you a number of things. You will learn that your band works exactly like a sports team. In order for it to function at its best you will have to learn what your team role is. Being ready to support your band mates and make quick decisions only on behalf of the music are very important skills that can be learned only with a good number of live performances. Playing is a completely different experience and has very little to do with practice. Practice makes you ready for your concert but once on stage you must forget about all the exercises and books, it's time to think about music. It's time to get in tune with the venue you are playing. It's important to be able to connect with the people around you, the stage, the new room, and sometimes a different instrument. I play the drums and sometimes I have to play with an instrument I have never seen nor used. Most of the time I use my own snare and cymbals but the rest of the drum kit might be totally new to me. How else will you learn all of these skills if not by playing live concerts. Students of HAA, it's time to open your eyes and ears and find a band!
