A descendant of the baroque guitar, the jarana is a fretted instrument that originated in the Huastec and Veracruz regions of Mexico. Jaranas are made in in several different sizes, of which the smallest--resembling a soprano ukulele--is called "mosquito." The instrument adds much rhythmic energy and strong harmonic support to a great variety of Mexican music.
