Recommendations for Young Beginners

For young children starting piano or keyboard, we often suggest group piano lessons, including our Music for Little Mozarts or Pianissimo classes, before moving on to private piano lessons.

Experience has shown that piano students younger than 5 years of age are more likely to drop out of the lesson program than older kids.  Most very young students do not yet have the focus, attention span, and discipline required to succeed in individual piano lessons.  Their frustration in lessons--as well as their parents' disappointment with the situation--can spoil the lesson experience to the point where they may drop out altogether.  What's worse, they may never return to music lessons, believing, erroneously, that music is just not for them.  For us, this is very sad to see.  But please note: more often than not, this problem could have been entirely avoidable!

Start your very young child's musical journey in group classes, rather than lessons, to give him enough time to mature.  Once he is prepared mentally and physically, music lessons will be an entirely different and much more positive experience.  One or two semesters in a group setting is all it may take for him to be able to enjoy the full range of benefits of one-on-one instruction at the right time.

Keep your eyes on the ball! The goal is not to get started as early as possible but to make music an important and ongoing part of your child's life and education! You wouldn't even consider music lessons for your child if you didn't want her to stick with it long-term, or would you?
