Suzuki Violin Instruction
at Hunterdon Academy of the Arts

Developed by the 20th-century Japanese violinist Dr. Shin’ichi Suzuki, the Suzuki method is based on the notion that all children are capable of great musical achievement.  It employs key aspects of language acquisition by young children, who learn through small steps and listening to their environment. Thus, Suzuki students first play by ear, before studying musical notation.  Another important element of the Suzuki method is training in groups of peers.  Rather than creating a competitive atmosphere between players, Suzuki fosters a nurturing musical environment.  It encourages collaboration and mutual support between students, regardless of their individual abilities and skill levels.
