Born in Brasília, Brazil, Maurício de Souza is a professional drummer who easily performs most styles of
music. With a professional career spanning 23 years, de Souza has performed in numerous rock/pop cover bands (Beatles, Pearl Jam, Rush, Metallica and countless others), jazz/Brazilian jazz groups, and professional orchestras. De Souza studied with world renowned jazz drummer Joe Morello and classical percussionist Ney Rosauro. He holds a bachelor’s degree in jazz performance (which includes classical percussion studies) and a teaching certification (K-12). He has been an educator for 10 years, teaching students of all levels and ages. As a guest percussionist, de Souza has performed numerous times with the Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro in his hometown. As a band leader for his jazz/Brazilian jazz groups, he has produced, arranged, and released two commercial albums, featuring guest artists Mike Stern (guitar) and Marc Copland (piano). Highlight performances with his groups include appearances at Blue Note Jazz Club (NYC), NJPAC, Red Bank Jazz and Blues Festival, and TV appearances in Brasília and New Haven (CT).
