Harvey M.
Harvey started his lifelong love of music at a young age. He started playing drums in elementary school and continued through high school, playing in all available bands – marching, concert, pit, jazz and all county bands. He earned his BA from Trenton State College in music performance, percussion. While at TSC, he studied all percussion instruments with the fabulous jazz drummer, Tony DeNicola, and played in the college percussion ensemble, jazz band, small jazz combos, and pit bands for musicals.
Since college, Harvey has kept very active playing many styles of music, including rock, blues, country, jazz, oldies, standards, latin, and more, in numerous bands, in duos and trios, and as a solo performer. He has also played in many local community bands, big bands, orchestras, symphonies, and pit bands for local theater companies and schools. He is experienced playing drums and percussion, drum set, piano/keyboards, guitar, and vocals.
Harvey began teaching private lessons while in college and continues teaching all percussion instruments and piano. While many students study drums (rudimental snare drum and drum set), he also teaches mallet percussion (marimba, xylophone, vibraphone and bells), timpani, and auxiliary percussion instruments that students may be required to play in school band, such as triangle, cymbals, woodblock, maracas, tambourine, claves, etc. He has taught after school lessons through the local elementary school, worked with the high school marching band, taught at local music studios, and in his home studio. He is familiar with the types of music played in school bands and can assist students in the areas that will benefit them most in their education, while adding fun things into the lessons that students may also be interested. He has assisted many students prepare pieces for recitals and college auditions.
Harvey also enjoys composing and arranging music for percussion groups, from solo and small groups to full percussion ensembles, and piano pieces. He has many pieces published through several online sheet music websites.
